Migration & Movement

Where animals go and when they move. On the globe today: four tracked routes — three woodcock fall migrations modeled on EWMRC GPS telemetry, and the Red Desert–Hoback mule deer corridor from published collar research. Every other species layer is occurrence density: where a species has been recorded, not the path it took.

Range & Distribution

Where a species holds, where it's thinning, and where the old maps have quietly stopped being true. Range edges are real lines, and they move.

Habitat & Conditions

Trout don't read calendars; they read water temperature. Stream gauges, snowpack, forest age, canopy density — the conditions that decide whether animals are there at all.

Every layer on this site is drawn from public, citable data — the same sources researchers use. If a number is on the globe, you can trace it back to the agency that measured it.

Attribution & licensing

  • Species occurrence density © the contributing datasets, aggregated and served by GBIF — the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, via the GBIF occurrence maps API. Fossil, paleo-database, and living-collection (zoo) records are excluded; the default since-2000 view additionally filters by observation year, and the all-time view keeps every wild record on file. Individual datasets carry their own licenses (CC0, CC BY, and CC BY-NC); this site is non-commercial and displays aggregated density only.
  • Earth imagery: NASA Blue Marble Next Generation and Black Marble (NASA Earth Observatory / Visible Earth), monthly datasets via NASA Earth Observations, and zoomed-in imagery tiles from NASA GIBS. NASA imagery is in the public domain; use does not imply NASA endorsement.
  • Mule deer corridor: published research of the Wyoming Migration Initiative / USGS. Woodcock tracks: modeled on Eastern Woodcock Migration Research Cooperative telemetry.
